Lowe’s helps Colorado high school with a dance to benefit young girl battling cancer
Raquel Reese knew what needed to happen.
“We gotta build a castle.”
She knew the size, the look, the color, everything.
Only one problem: she wasn’t sure how to physically build one.
Raquel is senior at Roosevelt High School in Johnstown, Colorado. She had the wild idea of building a castle inside the gym at her high school while sitting with her fellow student council members. They were all thinking of ways to raise money for Delaney.
Who’s Delaney? She’s a seven-year-old girl diagnosed with pediatric cancer. Her father, Andy, is a teacher at Roosevelt.
The idea then became simple: create a dance as a fundraiser for Delaney. She loves castles so, boom, Castle-In-A-School.
But how do we do it? Raquel’s mom, Rebecca, had an idea.
“I told her about Curtis.”
Curtis is a Pro Specialist at Lowe’s in Loveland. He once helped Rebecca with a light for her flagpole and has become the family’s go-to guy ever since.
When Raquel contacted Curtis to ask if he would help with such a grandiose request… he had one answer.
“You can never say no to people like that. They’re constantly doing things for others. Period.”
Curtis himself is a Stage 4 cancer survivor. He also helped another young girl a few years ago get her dream of meeting Taylor Swift. He was ready to help another girl get her dream as well.
Raquel, along with her siblings and members of the student council, worked alongside Curtis for hours on a Saturday in the back of the store building the walls and pillars of the castle. They also painted the pieces right there.
About a week later, Curtis drove almost an hour from his house to reach the school and help them put it together. But he let the students do the decorating.
“As fast as we were putting it up, they were coming behind and putting the pink foo-foo stuff on it,” Curtis said.
Whatever the decorations were, they worked. The gym transformed to a magical place for one special night to honor one special girl. Most importantly, the event raised thousands of dollars.
