Southside Community Farm's mission is to grow Black food sovereignty in Asheville, North Carolina's Southside neighborhood, which hosts most of Asheville's public housing. The neighborhood has no grocery store, which limits access to reliable, convenient, and healthy food. This project would create a resource for edible plants and fruit trees. The orchard space would be expanded to incorporate more native medicinal and edible fruit, and the existing orchard space would be diversified with more plants to create a permaculture-style, diverse food forest including bushes, herbs, flowering plants and ground cover. The project would mulch the orchard, to eliminate grass and the need to mow, and add picnic benches and park benches.
