The Gil Carter Initiative is focused on enhancing the development, dignity and quality of the lives of socioeconomically challenged children and young adults regardless of their race or religion. Through the Lowe’s Hometowns grant, their facility will receive updated HVAC, plumbing, ceiling tiles, painting, floors and more, allowing them to continue with their programming in areas of culinary arts, music, computer science, and agriculture.

Galax Volunteer Fire Department

The Galax Volunteer Fire Department has long educated school aged children on fire prevention. This took place in a camper built by Surrey Fire Concept but is unfortunately no longer functional. The Lowe’s Hometowns grant will enable a complete renovation of the camper, including structural changes, a new generator, wheels, linoleum, and carpet, so it can safely continue to serve as an educational resource for the community.

Friends of Four Star Inc

The historic Friends of Four Star Theatre is being converted into a world class multi-use community arts venue. The theatre's main floor needs some essential enhancements to transform the experience of those who are visiting. Through the Lowe’s Hometowns grant, entrances will be improved, ceilings will be finished in the lobby and existing bathrooms, and lobby flooring will be installed.

Espacio Community Center

The Espacio Community Center, run by the North Shore Community Development Coalition, hosts classes and can be rented out by members of the community. Espacio needs an update including interior and outdoor furnishings, a fresh coat of paint, garden beds, and lighting. When complete, Espacio will have a functional and attractive indoor and outdoor facility that is flexible and accessible for all.

Easterseals Florida

Founded in 1948, Easterseals Florida offers a variety of services to help people with disabilities address life's challenges and achieve personal goals. The Lowe’s Hometowns grant will provide much-needed updates to one of the cabins at their special-needs camping facility, including new interior walls, doors, floors, paint, water heater, washer/dryer and bathroom renovations. Six bathrooms in a 3-cabin unit will also be fully renovated with new toilets, painted, and new vanities.

East Lincoln High School

East Lincoln High School will add two additional tennis courts and repair and fencing on existing courts which will be the only public tennis courts for use in Lincoln County. Leveling off an area off for spectators and community members will allow the community to use this space whenever they please.

East Brunswick Youth Council

East Brunswick Youth Council focuses on improving teen mental wellness within the community. This project will create a safe space for teens to focus on their mental wellbeing. A backyard patio, fence and garden will be constructed outside for them to enjoy. A fresh coat of paint and a renovation of the kitchenette available to staff and youth are in the plan as well.

DuPage Habitat for Humanity and Chicago South Suburbs

A pocket park on the DuPage River for the residents of the Greenbrook Habitat for Humanity community will further Habitat’s philosophy to build up communities by bringing people together. The Lowe’s Hometowns grant will provide a suitable gathering place for people to bring their children on a nice day and a community garden. This park will answer a need for the community and go a long way in creating true community spirit.

Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens

With the Lowe’s Hometowns grant, the Dubuque Arboretum & Botanical Gardens will be completing a 340-foot ADA walkway with railing in the upper part of the Japanese Garden. The current pea gravel pathway makes it hard for those with mobility challenges to visit this part of the garden. These ADA walkways will ensure the opening of a future Children’s Garden, currently expected to open in mid-2024..

Drummond Historical Society

The Drummond Museum, housed a the original 1908 bank building, will soon be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A new roof, ceiling and flooring in the bathroom, back office and main exhibit areas are all needed. Windows that are dated back before 1930 need to be replaced and heating and air is necessary to keep artifacts safe. Cracked plaster, new paint, baseboards, lighting, and new landscaping will completely preserve this piece of history.
