Martha Jean Smith, 87, has lived in her Houston home for more than 50 years. Smith, who collects various items, had 20 inches of water flood her house when Hurricane Harvey passed through her neighborhood.

“It’s terrible.  All of my belongings are just ruined,” Smith said.

Smith has been through heavy storms in Houston before but nothing like Hurricane Harvey.

“It’s the first time I’ve had water in my house,” Smith said.

Lowe’s Heroes from Houston along with First Response Team of America arrived Wednesday, Sept. 6 to help Smith and her sons clean out her home. The Smiths were overwhelmed with emotion, and expressed their gratitude to the volunteers for their time and support.

“You made a very tough situation more bearable. We really appreciate it,” Andy Smith, one of Smith’s sons, said.

Martha Jean said, “I could never thank you enough.”

Here are some additional photos of Lowe’s Heroes helping the Smiths take the first steps to recovery.
