After floods wash away homes, associates bring help and hope

They say everything is bigger in Texas—and the hearts of Lowe’s Heroes volunteers are no exception. A total of 64 employees came together in Hidalgo County, Texas to aid flood victims with supplies and service.

In June, storms tore through the Rio Grande Valley, leaving 18 inches of rain and over $100 million of damage in their wake. Sewer complications contaminated the floodwater, destroying homes and washing away personal belongings.

Such was the case for Florinda Rodriguez, whose furniture and appliances were damaged beyond repair. She was busy distributing food and toiletries to others affected by the flood when the Lowe’s Heroes came to her aid.

“You have been a blessing with your time and love,” said Rodriguez. “You guys are doing your work with love. Thank you, all.”

Lowe’s Heroes were responsible for pulling furniture, rugs, appliances, clothes, and sheetrock from homes in the hard-hit town of Mercedes.

Rodriguez’s house was one of eight that benefited from the work of the volunteers. Just down the street, wind and flood damage destroyed the residence that the Chavez family has called home for three generations. With sheetrock falling from the ceiling, Lowe’s Heroes applied a temporary tarp shelter so that Maria and Rey Chavez could once again have a roof over their heads.

“I’m very grateful that I have the opportunity to give back to the community,” said Adela Gamez, a Lowe’s Hero from store 2485 in Edinburg. “I love that Lowe’s cares about our people.”

In addition to the labor provided, Lowe’s Heroes distributed over 200 buckets with much-needed hugs and cleaning supplies.
