Lowe’s is on a mission to get to one million. Plants, that is.

As part of Lowe’s Seeding Spring campaign, the company committed to planting up to one million new plants for Earth Day, and kicked it off on the first day of spring (March 20) on social media by growing a digital garden.

But to make good on its promise of planting real-life plants, more than 1,000 new plants and flowers went into the ground during a community initiative in Charlotte, North Carolina – Lowe’s Hometown. Lowe’s red vest volunteers teamed up with the City of Charlotte to help revitalize and beautify a parcel of land in Five Points Plaza, as part of a larger effort to enhance the Martin Street Urban Arboretum Trail.

“This site is a really urban area, you can see that it’s rapidly developing, large houses are going in. So, by buying this site, the City is protecting open green space and planting all of these plants is going to invite lots of pollinators and other insects that we need for biodiversity,” said Erin Oliverio, Division Manager for Landscape Management for the City of Charlotte.

Gary McCoy, a Lowe’s store manager in Central Charlotte, also volunteered his time at Five Points Plaza this week. Having helped with many revitalization projects around Charlotte, McCoy says giving back to our communities is in Lowe’s DNA.

“We’re not just people who work in these communities, we live in these communities as well. So, to be a part of a larger group who can come together and really support the community that I live in, it’s very meaningful.”
