YMCA Community Garden
A community YMCA seeks assistance in building a community garden that will address area food insecurity needs and serve as a place for seniors to come together to socialize and share their knowledge with the children of the county—a place where anyone who needs fresh vegetables can get them by sharing in the care of the garden.
Why It Matters
The Springhill YMCA is located amongst several low-income neighborhoods where food insecurity is a growing concern. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the community’s most underserved areas was making sure families and seniors had healthy meals.
With a community garden, seniors and children in the country could come together to socialize, care for the garden and help produce healthy foods for themselves and their families. Providing this space will encourage the coming together of neighborhood citizens and teach practical skills about gardening and nutrition.
The Impact
“What I love most about our Springhill, is the way neighbors help neighbors,” said project nominator Melissa Jonas. “We want to use this project as an effort towards eliminating Hunger in Hernando. We have great organizations that prepare and provide backpacks of food for children to take home for the weekend so that families do not go without. This would provide an opportunity to support those efforts with fresh fruits and vegetables. Many will offer their expertise in gardening and garden growing."
We would work with the local extension office and the Master Gardeners group to ensure that it stays kept up and fruitful for seasons to come. We might even have the opportunity to deliver the items grown in the garden to low-income seniors that are connected to Meals on Wheels and cannot leave their houses.
