Revitalization of Mt. Hope Learning Center
A learning center that serves low-to-moderate income families and a large black and indigenous people of color (BIPOC) population is in need of critical repairs, improvements and beautifications to its main facility. Weather damage and time have taken a toll on the building. With improvements, the center will be able to continue providing before and after school and summer programing, supplemental youth services and adult education courses to these important populations.
Why It Matters
Mt. Hope Learning Center (MHLC) has been serving the community for over 20 years. And more than one decade ago, an army of skilled volunteers gave 140 Cypress Street a facelift and renovated the historic building to be the headquarters for MHLC. But time and weather have wreaked havoc on the main facility, leaving behind structural concerns and a laundry list of cosmetic issues. If left too long, these minor areas of concern could become large safety concerns and seriously impede the proper functioning of the Learning Center.
Access and health and safety are top priority for the youth and families utilizing the space. Mt. Hope Learning Center was founded as a safe environment to learn and improve the quality of one’s life. It is only correct that the Learning Center itself should reflect that positive motivation in its physical space as well as its mission and programming.
The Impact
“I am an employee, but also a neighborhood resident and consider that I have a stake in the growth and success of my neighbors,” said project nominator, MJ Daly. “COVID-19 has hit the non-profit community heavily. Concurrently, our city is in the midst of an education crisis."
This project, the revitalization of our headquarters, would mean the safe and healthy continuation and growth of our programming to elevate the community.
