Renovation for the senior generation
A historic town hall that houses a senior citizen center seeks to adapt its space to provide a better, safer, and more flexible and spacious area for seniors to socialize, dine and exercise. The space will also help the hall better serve the community with an improved space to host events.
Why It Matters
The 100-year-old Old Town Hall that now serves as the Odessa Senior Citizen Center is a piece of history the community looks upon with pride. After many years of work to maintain and improve the building, it now, importantly, provides a space for seniors to socialize, enjoy home-cooked meals as well as participate in a range of exercise classes.
However, the group has outgrown the space. Plus, the old, worn-out carpet is a hazard for senior citizens. By opening up the space between its main two rooms with a folding door system and extending the hardwood floor throughout, the seniors will have the facility they need to maintain good health, decrease loneliness, and improve longevity.
The Impact
“When our Germans ancestors established Odessa in 1900s, they left a legacy that still exists today,” said project nominator Terri King. “It can be seen in the long-term investments made in the community over the last century: hospital, nursing home, assisted-living, school system, park, public swimming pool, Old Town Hall, industrial park, golf course, and a community celebration that draws thousands of people each year. While other small communities are disappearing, Odessa has a bright future."
In Odessa, we know the grass isn’t always greener someplace else, rather, we need to make the most of the community we have and nurture it so it continues to thrive.
