Rancho Cielo Leadership Garden
A center of learning and social services for marginalized youth seeks assistance with its community garden that is in dire need of an upgrade. The cultivated garden is used as an enriching learning oasis to teach students useful skills.
Why It Matters
The garden is a welcoming spot where the students of Rancho Cielo and the community are welcomed and offered a positive learning oasis. But currently, the garden is in dire need of an upgrade. The aging garden beds need to be reinforced and the earth in the beds is uneven, making it hard to walk safely and tend to the garden.
These updates will help make the garden more productive and ensure a positive, more successful learning experience for students. The Leadership Garden is one of the many wrap-around programs offered by the school that is dedicated to transforming lives and empowering at-risk youth to become accountable, competent, productive and responsible citizens.
The Impact
“I would have to say as a teenager I would have benefited from a place like Rancho Cielo and the staff that work there,” said project nominator Julie Lorenzen. “It’s a safe place and we all need a safe place. The youth served by Rancho Cielo have had to overcome many obstacles - gang violence, poverty, teen pregnancy, low educational attainment. Rancho Cielo is a place where these students can start over and transform their lives for the better."
The garden is a special place for them to destress, build self-esteem, and become better acquainted with the ingredients they make for our restaurant.
