QSAC School at Whitestone
QSAC (Quality Services for the Autism Community) is a New York City and Long Island-based non-profit charter school that supports children and adults with autism, together with their families, in achieving greater independence, realizing their future potential, and contributing to their communities. The organization seeks to make improvements to the appearance and function of its indoor and outdoor space.
Why It Matters
All of the funding the school receives goes into direct care for the students and professional development trainings to keep the staff up to date on best practices. As a result, they are left with limited funding for building repairs. In addition to appearance, they have a lack of storage, with results in less usable space.
They are only able to use about half of their gym, which also has been serving as their cafeteria. They cannot use the stage in the gym, as it is currently used for storage as well. Their current playground can only hold students younger than 12 years old. As a school that serves students up to age 21, their population from age 12-21 has nowhere to go outside and play.
The Impact
At QSAC, they are proud of their program and the work they do. They are well known in the area for their outstanding care. However, their building does not currently reflect the program they have. With mismatched floors and dated paint, they are hoping to better represent themselves to their students and the families they serve.
