A patio for Parkinson's
A charitable organization that offers people with Parkinson’s Disease exercise programs that keep them in shape and help slow the disease’s progression was forced to close during the pandemic. Open again in a new gym space, the organization is seeking assistance to add an outdoor, workout-friendly patio area, so it can continue to provide its programs to those in the community who are dealing with Parkinson’s.
Why It Matters
After being forced to close due to the pandemic, the nonprofit In This Corner is back open again in a new gym space ready to serve and encourage those dealing with Parkinson’s Disease. The gym is functional, but with an increased desire to be socially distanced, the facility is in need of an outdoor area for workouts and exercising. The ground now is uneven and is an especially dangerous tripping/balance hazard for those with Parkinson’s. Because the only research-based evidence of slowing the progression of Parkinson’s is strenuous exercise, it’s important for this community to expand and improve its workout spaces, allowing more citizens with the disease to attend the gym and better their health in a safe way.
The Impact
“Our community of People with Parkinson's (PWP) are overcoming challenges daily and the program that we offer in this space is significant in helping with their many symptoms,” wrote project nominator Marianne Chapin. “Social distancing was increasingly challenging the anxiety, depression and isolation PWP endure. The biggest challenge we faced as a group was getting everyone back to working out together and in person while addressing the fear of COVID. The fresh air, sunshine and hazard free mobility of the patio is crucial to their success. The purpose of this project is to add a layer of safety to the services that we offer so we can continue fighting back against this disease.”
