Monroe Street Neighborhood Center
A nonprofit that provides educational, recreational, and social service opportunities to neighborhood residents seeks assistance in developing a village of tiny, energy-efficient homes to house those in need, with a specific focus on establishing a tool lending library stocked with tools and resources for members of the neighborhood to use to maintain or improve their homes, gardens or yards. Area Lowe’s stores helped kickstart the program by building the first two homes in the village.
Why It Matters
To combat the lack of safe and affordable housing for those with the lowest incomes, the Monroe Street Neighborhood Center is developing a community of tiny homes called Bluff Street Village (BSV). BSV takes an empty city block where old homes have been previously demolished and builds 20 new, beautiful energy-efficient homes.
Along with creating tiny homes, an important part of the project is building a supportive community. The goal of BSV is not only to change the lives of many families but to increase homeownership as well as transform and bring hope to the neighborhood.
The Impact
“This is an older neighborhood that has seen major disinvestment for 40 years,” wrote project nominator Larry Clark, pastor at Monroe Street United Methodist Church. “It suffers from blight, too many absentee landlords and age of infrastructure. The Monroe Street Neighborhood Center is committed to working with our neighbors to create new life and energy in our community.”
