Library Buildings Connector
A library seeks assistance in constructing an enclosed structure to join its two buildings to protect patrons, staff and library materials from the heat, cold, and rain, and to provide a safe, secure and accessible pathway as they go from one building to another. This library is the hub of its community, and the renovation will allow staff to devote more time to the development of programs and services and offer valuable resources to residents.
Why It Matters
During summer reading programs, a local “heroes day” and other library events, children and caregivers gather in the open space by the library. These events provide entertainment for local families as well as attract citizens from out of town, which helps stimulate the local economy. However, there is currently no covering outside the library that would protect residents from the intense Alabama heat, cold or rain. Currently, temporary tents can be used to cover the space, but setting up and taking them down is both time consuming and expensive. A pavilion covering would help protect kids and adults from the elements and provide a welcoming, comfortable place for frequent events that bring the community together.
The Impact
"Brundidge is where I was born and reared. It is small enough that its citizens greet one another on the street. It is family-oriented and open to a variety of people. It continues to fight to bring small businesses to the area at a time when other small towns have given up,” said project nominator Theresa Trawick. “I admire the willingness of Brundidge to have entertaining and educational programs for its community.”
