Learn and Grow
A Boys & Girls Club chapter that promotes healthy living and provides programs and events that unite the community wishes to improve its outdoor space so it can be an inclusive, inviting, and supportive environment where everyone is welcome and can thrive. The chapter hopes to re-landscape its weed-filled lawn with an irrigation system and enhance the outdoor area with creative, age-appropriate play and hang zones that encourage exercise, fun and education.
Why It Matters
The James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of has been an important part of the community of Woburn for over 55 years. It is where greatness has a voice - the children. To keep their program fees low and ensure no child is turned away due to the inability to pay, outdoor spaces often have to take a "back seat" to more imperative initiatives. This has contributed to the current, unsafe conditions of the club’s fields and outdoor spaces.
The Impact
“James L. McKeown Boys & Girls Club of Woburn has existed at Charles Gardner Lane in Woburn, Massachusetts, for more than 55 years. It is a community staple that generations of young people have known as their ‘second home’,” said Julie Gage of the BGCA of Woburn. “We believe in the power of outdoor play to increase and improve health outcomes for young people, especially those from low-income families. As a medium-sized non-profit, it is always challenging to find the balance of funding between programs and capital improvements. We believe that participating in the Lowe's 100 Hometowns program will allow us to enhance our progress on this goal.”
