Kennedy Park West
A charitable organization that provides limited-income families, adults with disabilities, and seniors with affordable housing wishes to improve its facilities so it can continue to help reduce poverty, strengthen families, and empower communities. Critical repairs and accessibility modifications are needed to ensure the housing and the grounds are safe, accessible and offer dignified housing to individuals in need.
Why It Matters
The housing serves those who fall between the cracks of not being eligible for housing assistance, but not making enough money to pay market rents. Those served at Kennedy Park West have a variety of circumstances that make them vulnerable. Disabilities (especially mental illness), physical handicaps, unexpected pregnancies, domestic abuse, and alcoholism are all examples of households that have risk factors for homelessness.
The Impact
“I have worked in social services in Dubuque for over 10 years and have consistently seen the barriers that families face when looking for affordable housing,” wrote project nominator and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Dubuque outreach director Stacy Sherman. “Having a safe and stable home sets the foundation for households to be able to thrive. Kennedy Park West provides this stability for many families, and in addition, provides a supportive community neighborhood. Many families then feel empowered to work towards their other goals, such as seeking higher income employment or furthering their education or working on saving to purchase their own home.”
