Greenhouse for Lighthouse
A nonprofit organization focused on providing at-risk teens a safe, positive place and support programs including tutoring, mentoring and community service projects seeks to build a greenhouse on its property. The greenhouse will allow the organization to grow its own vegetables and other produce to help bolster the meals they serve to at-risk youth while giving them the opportunity to build life skills by working in the garden themselves.
Why It Matters
Lighthouse is a non-profit organization and has helped thousands upon thousands of at-risk teens through the years to be successful in life through its many programs, including tutoring, mentoring, and community service. Lighthouse also provides nutritious meals for these disadvantaged youth, when nutrition may be a problem for them at home. Because the winters are long and cold in Nebraska, a greenhouse is a necessity for growing vegetables year-round. By helping in the greenhouse to grow the needed produce, the teens at Lighthouse will also learn excellent self-sufficient life skills. The project will serve the 1,000+ at-risk youth that Lighthouse serves yearly in multiple ways.
The Impact
“Lincoln is a wonderful and special place to live and work. People take care of one another,” said project nominator James Jenkins. “An example of how people care has been Lighthouse, which has been successful for so many years helping the at-risk young people of our community. One of my favorite things at Lighthouse is the wall of graduation photos of the at-risk students Lighthouse has helped to earn their high school diploma and have a real chance at having a successful life, when that might not have been possible otherwise.”
