Gilroy Center for the Arts
An arts center that supports artistic and cultural activities in its community seeks to repair a decaying facade, install safety exterior lighting and paint the exterior and interior of the building.
Why It Matters
The community was still grieving and recuperating following the horrific July 2019 Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting when the COVID-19 pandemic arrived and created more adversity to overcome. Gilroy is in need of support. The center seeks to bridge the relationship with diverse populations through arts & cultural activities. Improving the center will help the community continue to promote and embrace the artwork created by residents.
The Impact
“This project is important to me because as a community member I’ve seen the benefits of having a forum to freely express yourself and heal from past traumas through the arts,” said project nominator Marianne Eichenbaum. “Our community suffered a major blow because of the July 2019 Gilroy Garlic shooting and never had the chance to recover before entering into the Covid-19 pandemic. We need a place to share our expressions of emotion and lean on each other for strength and support even more so now.”
