Fidos For Freedom, Inc. renovations
An organization that helps improve the quality of life for the disabled by partnering them with specially trained service dogs seeks to renovate its restroom facilities to be more accessible, specifically making larger stalls that will allow both client and service dog to comfortably fit into them.
Why It Matters
For a mobility-impaired person, a dog that can fetch, help you dress, make your bed, and navigate shopping can mean the difference between assisted and independent living. Fidos currently has 33 active clients that attend training classes at the facility. Many of them use wheelchairs, walkers and/or scooters.
The Impact
“More than 30 years ago, Fidos was founded to improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities in the Baltimore-Washington area by partnering them with specially trained assistance dogs,” said executive director Diane Bernier. “For a mobility-impaired person, a dog that can fetch, help you dress, make your bed, and navigate shopping can mean the difference between assisted and independent living. A hearing-impaired person can walk confidently in the world knowing their dog will alert them to cues they cannot perceive. A veteran can walk more confidently, knowing their service dog will help them through issues that might trigger their PTSD.”
