East Bend Town Square
A town with no park is working to complete a Town Square park project that will serve as a place for children and adults alike to come together to play, relax and enjoy one another’s company. Centrally located in the town, the ADA-accessible park will also host a variety of community activities.
Why It Matters
Due to East Bend’s size – one square mile – and the central location of the Town Square, all town residents will be able to walk or bike to the park area with ease. With the elementary school located one block away from the project, students, their families and school staff will get valuable use out of the space. A playground is a necessity for children. Playgrounds give them a chance to express themselves, explore interests, and improve motor skills. And this playtime can help lay a foundation for an active lifestyle as an adult.
The Impact
“This project has always been a dream for me and many others for the youth of all ages in our community,” wrote project nominator Karen Matthews. “Being a committee member for this project has been a lifesaver for me during a very low point in my life. I lost my husband two years ago. As you can imagine, this has been a very difficult journey for me. He was also a teacher and coach in this community. He loved working with youth and loved this community. We both believed the future of this small town lies in the youth. Being involved in this project has given me a path to work through my grief, for which I am very grateful. I want to help this town to provide a space where children can enjoy the outdoors, be active, and continue to understand the sense of community.”
