Downtown dining breezeway
A town seeks to reimagine a neglected breezeway and create an outdoor shaded dining area for people to space out and enjoy each other’s company along with meals from local restaurants. The spruced-up space will also serve as an outdoor venue for area organizations and groups to gather for meetings and events.
Why It Matters
When COVID ramped up last year, it highlighted the need for outdoor open-aired seating in downtown Moultrie, also known as the “Heart of the Community”. Currently, there are only four tables to dine at outside in the entire Historic Downtown District. With many concerned about social distancing, the shaded outdoor dining area would be the perfect solution for people to space out while enjoying each other’s company.
Plus, with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees in the summertime, the shade currently provided combined with music and seating would offer great views of the courthouse for diners who want to enjoy the outdoors. It would also bring more foot traffic to the area year-round, which would be a boost for nearby businesses.
The Impact
“Since I started working here 22 years ago, we have held countless events. One of the locations people flock to during those events is the breezeway because it is centrally located and it is shaded. I have fond memories of helping/promoting/photographing a Pancake Breakfast, a Farmers Market, and countless non-profits which used the breezeway to help serve Moultrie & Colquitt County citizens. If we receive this grant, we will breathe new life into this space, making it better than it ever was before,” said project nominator Amy Johnson.
As we work to overcome COVID and return to normal, the breezeway can be used for many purposes. It could be a place to gather and socially distance, a shaded place to sit and talk with friends, and of course, a place to sit & eat lunch or dinner while enjoying a lovely view of our courthouse.
