Critical home repairs and outreach services for Siler City seniors
The Chatham County Council on Aging seeks to repair and rehabilitate homes in need of critical health and safety modifications for low-income seniors, as well as create an outdoor bocce ball court for the senior center clientele.
Why It Matters
This community has a poverty rate in excess of 30% and significant housing quality concerns. Staff regularly hear stories of seniors without basic home necessities such as heating, electricity and adequate plumbing.
The Impact
“Siler City has retained its rural character and small-town identity, even as nearby urban areas swallowed up smaller neighbors,” wrote project nominator Dennis Streets, executive director of the Chatham County Council on Aging. “Its original agricultural roots are evident along the banks of the Rocky River, the rolling hills and countryside, and even in its neighbors. Over decades, the local economic environment of Siler City has shifted as agricultural industry-related jobs moved away from the area, leaving many aging homeowners on fixed incomes with limited access to support services."
The pandemic has only exacerbated the sense of isolation for many of these seniors. This project would provide home repair to aging homeowners in need and develop new outdoor and virtual programs for our isolated senior neighbors.
