Citrus Construction Academy Mobile Bus Shop
The Citrus Construction Academy created a building and trades skills course at the local technical college, and now they need support to complete a mobile bus shop which will serve as a construction academy. Housed in a former school bus, the hands-on mobile classroom will expand their reach and bring construction skills education to younger generations at area secondary schools and other youth-centered organizations in town.
Why It Matters
The goal is to place projects into the hands of the youth so they can learn valuable skills they otherwise wouldn’t be exposed to. CCA has found that students are interested in trade once they learn more about it. However, since the school system no longer offers shop classes, students aren't aware of the doors the trades might open. They want to be able to use this bus to teach trades all across the community so students struggling with in the classroom, or those who don't plan to go to college, have another solid option in front of them.
The Impact
“Construction labor is in short supply in our area. While [this project] will not fix the problem today, it gives our students an opportunity to do something different with their lives and futures,” said project nominator, Harold Walker of Citrus Construction Academy. “I've seen what a difference this type of training made in my life and how it can help the kids today.”
