CCC Schoolhouse restoration project
Human Systems Research – a nonprofit dedicated to archaeological research, historic preservation and public education seeks assistance in preserving and restoring its 1938 schoolhouse headquarters, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is the last of the historic Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Camp Schoolhouses still standing in New Mexico.
Why It Matters
This renovation will provide community residents and visitors with reminders of the building’s rich past and be a model for historic preservation. Most camps now exist only in historical records. This can become a place to share the stories of those whose lives were molded within those walls.
The Impact
“I've lived in Las Cruces for over 40 years and worked in this building for more than 20 years,” wrote project nominator Deborah Dennis of Human Systems Research Inc. “I've learned of the amazing past of the Mesilla Valley and have a special commitment to the future of this CCC Schoolhouse. This building has a unique history to share. With help from Lowe's to properly finish the exterior, HSR can invite the community inside to learn more about this place, its stories, and about the value of historic preservation."
This city, home to so much history, has few touchstones to its past. The CCC Schoolhouse is one of those survivors, a gem waiting to be polished.
