Cardinal Shehan Center art room upgrade
A community center that provides resources and opportunities for local children seeks assistance in making much-needed improvements to its art room, a staple of the center that provides out-of-school enrichment programs that help children succeed academically, make them more likely to develop healthy lifestyle habits and less likely to engage in risky behavior.
Why It Matters
The Cardinal Shehan Center provides programming for underserved children in grades kindergarten through high school in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The Center is located in one of the City’s most densely populated and impoverished. The Center’s building was constructed in 1883 and thousands of people walk through our doors each year. Because of this, the building requires a lot of maintenance each year and the art room is at the top of that list this year. Studies have shown that children that attend quality out-of-school programs are more likely to succeed academically, less likely to engage in risky behavior, and more likely to develop healthy lifestyle habits.
The Impact
“Bridgeport is an incredibly resilient and vibrant community. It is diverse and full of different cultures, languages, and interests. We see this reflected at the center each day. We see our families working hard to ensure that their children have access to high quality education and enrichment programs to ultimately better the community,” said project nominator Sarah Motti. “I have seen children tell their stories through art, and it is especially necessary after a challenging year of COVID-19 and increasing inequities in our community. An upgraded art room will show our young people that they are deserving of a high quality space, and inspire them to be the best that they can be!”
