Anchor Ridge - Kids Club
Anchor Ridge has been serving the North Wilkesboro and greater Wilkes County area since 2012, and its mission is to fight poverty by providing hungry families with food, basic hygiene items, household goods, and home repair supplies. Located in one of the original Lowe's distribution centers, Anchor Ridge serves thousands of people on a monthly basis throughout the Appalachian Mountain region. Anchor Ridge's Kid's Club program, serving hundreds of local Wilkes County kids on a monthly basis also operates from this facility. The facility serves as a local community center and is in need of repairs and updates.
Why It Matters
The communities that are served are some of the poorest places in the United States. With most of the coal mines closed, the unemployment rate is at record highs, the education level is at all-time lows, and the families that live in this area are stuck in the middle. In some of the communities, the rate of poverty for children under the age of 18 is approximately 60%.
The Impact
At this community center, families are greeted with a warm, welcoming smile on a weekly basis to receive groceries, hygiene items and other household goods. Along with receiving these basic items, they are also able to shop – for free – in the clothing closet and home goods areas. As families flow through Anchor Ridge, they are offered hugs, encouragement and prayer from our staff and volunteer groups.
