Ambrose Community Garden
A community health district seeks assistance in improving its community garden in a food desert, which will help fill a critical need for healthy and quality food access and education that will help residents to take charge of their health by understanding nutritional benefits of informed food choices. The garden will also strengthen community ties.
Why It Matters
Beneficiaries from the garden include, the homeless, low-income seniors, youth and families, unemployed and underemployed, formerly mass-incarcerated individuals and non-documented immigrants. A viable and active community garden in this frontline community helps to address equity issues by critically filling a need for healthy and quality food access through food security, reducing food transport distance that affect nutritional benefits and increasing access and diversity of food varieties.
The Impact
“With a population of 25,000 residents, 3 grocery stores & 10 liquor stores, it’s obvious there is a food disparity issue in our community,” wrote project nominator Jasmine Cisneros, who is the garden’s lead organizer. “According to the most recent health study conducted in Contra Costa County, over 50% of our population is obese. To bridge this disparity, volunteers have launched several programs through the Ambrose Community Garden. We have a garden academy program for the children called, ‘Little Sprouts,’ which has given our families a unique food education opportunity. In addition to the academy program, The Ambrose community garden is safe and healthy space for families to come and source fresh free locally grown organic produce. Throughout this pandemic, the garden has been the source of health and community. With (Lowe's) help, we can continue our mission.”
