Activate Selma
A community organization – Activate Selma – seeks to revitalize the small, rural community through a series of beautification and improvement initiatives. Focused on the downtown area, projects include turning a neglected park into an exercise yard for an animal hospital’s patients, repairing and prepping a wall that faces the town hall for a mural painting, refreshing painted trash cans and painting playground equipment in the children’s park. Each improvement will help make the downtown area a bit more vibrant.
Why It Matters
The project is important to Activate Selma because they want to encourage business owners to invest in Selma and show everyone that citizens in this community truly do care.
The Impact
Selma, North Carolina, is a diamond in the rough - a historic southern train town and a diverse community of 7,000. Organizers for the project say they want their residents to feel like downtown Selma is their year-round “living room,” a place to play with their children on the turtle and monkey gym, to walk their dogs at the pocket park and feel like they’re walking in a Hallmark movie with freshly painted walls, floral planters and convenient and colorful trash cans. Project organizers also expressed that the excitement and pride that comes from being chosen as one of Lowe’s 100 Hometowns will create a spark in locals that they believe will kick off an era of community engagement and pride.
